“Am I going to make it?”

Kevin’s day took a devastating turn when a motorcycle ride ended in a serious collision with an uninsured driver.

I was trapped under the van for more than an hour.

Kevin had severe injuries including a collapsed lung, broken shoulder and fractured eye socket.

“I went out that particular morning to Bridlington, I'd  just got to the first roundabout and a van pulled out from my left. I went to avoid him, and then he turned right into a little junction.

"I had no choice but to hit the side of him.”

The impact threw Kevin face down on the road, with teeth scattered on the tarmac.

His arm was out to one side, broken at the shoulder and the elbow. Paramedics had to administer extra strong pain relief so that they could manoeuvre the arm back into position.

“I fractured my eye sockets, fractured the roof of my mouth, dislodged my diaphragm, flattened a lung. I also did something to my knee. I wasn’t in a very good state at all.”

Kevin was hospitalised with  life‑threatening injuries. Although he was initially discharged, he had to be readmitted after developing breathing difficulties and showing signs of sepsis. Recovery was slow and uncertain, and everyday tasks became overwhelming.

He came out of hospital in a wheelchair and found doing normal daily activities, like brushing his teeth, difficult. The emotional impact was just as profound as the physical injuries. Kevin was forced to confront difficult questions about his future and his independence. “I did think a lot about my future,” he explains. “I had plenty of time. How can I make a living in this state?”

Even now, moments of frustration can be painful reminders of what was taken from him.

“I do get upset is when I’m trying to reach something with my arm and I will go, why me? He knocked me off and I can’t lift something out of the cupboard because of his stupidity, you know?”

The driver of the van was uninsured, and Kevin was left facing a difficult road to recovery with no prospect of compensation. And then MIB stepped in.

MIB involved specialist rehab providers and arranged support from an occupational therapist to help Kevin rebuild independence and manage daily life.

“The support from MIB I just cannot fault at all,” Kevin says. “It was absolutely phenomenal. They really did look after my wellbeing far better than I could ever have done myself. There was just no end of help for my recovery. Thanks to MIB.”
