How to check and stay insured on your vehicle

Understand how and why to check your insurance status and know what to do if you receive a letter from MIB and the DVLA.

What to do if you’ve received a letter saying your vehicle is uninsured

Every month, MIB and the DVLA send out insurance advisory letters to the keepers of vehicles that aren't showing as insured. If you get one, don't panic – there could be a valid reason for this. It's just a prompt to check your insurance or fix a problem before any legal action is taken.

Your data and privacy

MIB stores and processes data on behalf of the motor insurance industry. You can submit a data subject access request if you need to check your claims history, get details of a police stop or seizure, or check if a vehicle you own has been registered as stolen.

The importance of being insured

There are lots of things to think about when you’re buying, renewing or updating motor insurance. We can help you check your insurance status and understand the type of policy you need depending on how you’re using your vehicle.

Driving without insurance can be devastating for both you and those around you. If you’re involved in an accident or collision without proper insurance, the full cost of any resulting claim against you could become yours to pay back over months or years. You could also lose your licence, have your vehicle seized or crushed, or even get a criminal record.

Motor insurance helps make roads safer. By being properly insured for the vehicle you’re driving and the purpose of your journey, you’re physically and financially protecting yourself and those around you.

Know your responsibilities as a driver

It’s your responsibility to keep your insurance policy up to date and covering your needs properly. We can help you to understand what adequate cover looks like and how to make sure you are continuously insured.
