Supporting victims of motor terrorism
Understand what motor terrorism is and how MIB is able to offer support when a vehicle is used to cause harm.
What is motor terrorism
Motor terrorism refers to confirmed acts of terrorism where a vehicle is deliberately used as the means to cause injury, death or damage. An event must be confirmed as a terrorist attack by the government, when it meets the definition and criteria set out under the Terrorism Act 2000.
How does MIB get involved?
If a terrorist attack is confirmed, and a vehicle is involved, MIB is the organisation that will handle any compensation claims resulting from the attack. It doesn’t matter if the vehicle is insured or not.
There are strict definitions for what using a vehicle for terrorism looks like. Every event has to be investigated on a case-by-case basis. If the investigation determines that the vehicle itself wasn’t deliberately used to cause harm within the attack, then MIB may pass any claims submitted over to the Civil Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
