Data MIB holds and how to access it

MIB provides a wide range of data services for the motor insurance industry which help to detect and prevent insurance fraud. We work in partnership with the police and DVLA to help reduce uninsured driving on UK roads.

What data you can request

To access certain types of personal data held by MIB, you can submit a data subject access request (DSAR) online or via email, phone or post. MIB will respond to every request within one month.

MIPD

Motor insurance policies

We can search Motor Insurance Policy Data (MIPD) for details of current or past motor insurance policies. Information is held on this database for seven years.

CUE

Claims history

We can search the Claims and Underwriting Exchange (CUE) database for information about motor, home, personal injury, and industrial illness incidents that may or may not have resulted in a claim. Information is held on this database for six years from the date the claim or notification is closed.

Claims

A claim handled by MIB

We can search the MIB claims system for information about a claim against an uninsured or untraced driver. Information is held on this database for six years from the date a claim is closed.

VS&TD

Stolen and written-off vehicles

We can search the Vehicle Salvage and Theft Data (VS&TD) held in Navigate for evidence of whether a vehicle you own is marked as previously stolen or written-off. Information is held on this database for seven years.

Police

Police stops and seizures

We can search the Police Helpline (PHL) system for details of police stops and seizures relating to uninsured vehicles. Information is held on this database for two years.

Insurance

Vehicle insurance status

We can search DVLA and MIB data for details of vehicles that show as uninsured. Information is held on this database for two years and one month.

askCUE PI

Personal injury enquiries

We can search the askCUE PI Database for details of enquiries made by solicitors when handling your personal injury claim. Information is held on this database for three years.

Navigate

Insurance searches

We can search for details of enquiries made by an individual or approved organisation on your vehicle. Information is held on this database for three years.

Frequently asked questions about data subject access requests

You can submit your request for personal data online, or via phone, email or post. You may ask for information for yourself or on behalf of somebody else if you have authority to do so. You’ll need proof of identity for all requests.

Data subject access requests submitted to MIB will be responded to within one month.

In most cases, your information will be provided to you free of charge, however, if the request becomes unreasonable or excessive, we reserve the right to charge a fee. If this is applicable, we’ll contact you when we receive your request.
