What we need to carry out an insurance check
If you need us to carry out an insurance check, there are a few important pieces of information you'll need to have ready.
The more complete your details, the quicker we can get things moving.
This lets us quickly pull up any information from the database - it’s our starting point for any insurance check. Be sure to check for cherished plates too.
Get the driver's version of the situation. Do they think they’re insured privately, through work, as a named driver, or something else? This helps us figure out where to look on Navigate, the central database of all live motor insurance policies.
If the driver isn’t the policy holder, we’ll need to know who is. To pass data protection checks and speak with the insurer, please gather:
Full name
Date of birth
Address
Without these, we won’t get very far.
We need to know which insurance company we’re contacting. If possible, also get:
The policy number
Whether the driver arranged their cover directly or through a broker
This saves time and avoids unnecessary back-and-forth.
What was the driver doing at the time? Some policies don’t cover things like business use or food delivery - so it’s important to know the reason for the journey.
If any of this is left out of your call or webform, this will slow down the check - so it’s best to get everything up front!

Top tip: think fraud!
Make sure you’re asking about the relationship between the driver, policy holder and who the register keeper is. If the driver and policy holder do not know each other, this may be an indicator for fraud.
If the register keeper or owner is not known then we may need to tell the insurer the insurable interest might be in question.
