Accelerating to Zero: how we’ve been turning our strategy into action

From reducing claim lifecycles and improving data quality to preparing for self-driving vehicles and tackling illegal e-scooter use, discover six ways we're making progress against our Accelerating to Zero strategy.

Understanding uninsured driving

To end uninsured driving, we first need to understand who’s doing it, and why.

Over the past year, we've completed in-depth qualitative and quantitative research to build a clearer picture of un – or underinsured drivers. We're also developing new ways of gathering insight from uninsured drivers themselves through our partner law firms, helping us better understand the behaviours and circumstances that lead people to drive without appropriate insurance.

The findings will help shape future campaigns, interventions and partnerships designed to prevent uninsured driving before it happens. A test campaign is already underway: we delivered a digital campaign for 18-25-year-olds, targeting them with messages designed to challenge common misconceptions around insurance cover.

Alongside this work, we've continued our education efforts. Updated PSHE lesson plans, including a new Key Stage 2 module, will help children and young people understand road safety, uninsured driving and the growing role of micromobility.

We’ve also launched our new website, with relevant content educating the public on topics including uninsured driving, insurance scams, micromobility, automated vehicles and driving abroad.

Faster, fairer claims

When someone is injured by an uninsured or untraced driver, getting the right support quickly can make a real difference.

That's why we've continued to focus on improving the claims experience for those who need us most. Over the past year, we've reduced average claim lifecycles by 13 days while maintaining high quality standards and achieving customer satisfaction above target.

We've also delivered 43 continuous improvement changes across our claims operation, like enhanced tracking, automation and system integration. These are helping us process claims more efficiently, improve visibility and provide a better experience for claimants, while supporting industry members through greater efficiency and insight.

Alongside these improvements, we've expanded training, guidance and engagement opportunities for members, so we can work together more efficiently to support victims of uninsured driving.

Protecting victims in a self-driving future

Self-driving vehicles are coming. We're working to ensure the protections people rely on today continue to exist tomorrow.

Over the past year, we've led discussions with government and industry partners to address the legal and operational challenges associated with uninsured automated vehicles and more widely what their rollout means for UK motor insurers. By tackling these issues now, we're helping ensure victims of collisions involving uninsured self-driving vehicles can continue to get fair and effective support in the future.

We've also established an industry working group focused on the collision data requirements for self-driving vehicles. This work will help define the information needed to investigate future claims efficiently and fairly, giving insurers greater clarity and making sure victims can get the support they need.

Keeping members informed has remained a priority, with dedicated briefing events helping insurers understand emerging risks, regulatory developments and future compensation arrangements.

Keeping more uninsured vehicles off our roads

Keeping uninsured vehicles off our roads requires more than traditional enforcement alone. That's why we're exploring how trusted organisations that interact with drivers and vehicles every day (like taxi operators, roadside assistance providers, logistics companies, parking app providers and car park operators) can help identify uninsured or incorrectly insured vehicles, creating new opportunities to tackle uninsured driving before it leads to harm.

Working with the AA, Wolverhampton Council Taxi Licensing and Transport for London, we've completed an eight-week discovery phase and developed a pilot solution that will be tested later this year. If successful, the initiative could create new opportunities to detect uninsured driving, helping keep more uninsured vehicles off the road and better protect innocent road users.

Helping members improve their data

Behind every successful intervention, insurance check and claim is reliable data.

Accurate, complete and consistent motor insurance policy data plays a vital role in tackling uninsured driving, helping police get uninsured cars off our roads and improving industry outcomes.

Through the Industry Data Working Group, we've brought together experts from across underwriting, claims, data and analytics to establish a common set of data quality standards for motor insurance policy data.

Later this year, members will receive enhanced reports through Navigate, providing greater visibility of data quality performance, benchmarking against agreed standards and practical insight into areas for improvement.

By helping members improve the quality of the data they submit, we're strengthening the foundations that support better decision-making across the industry.

Making micromobility safer

The rise of e-scooters and e-bikes is changing how people travel, but it is also creating new challenges for road safety, regulation and insurance.

Throughout the year, we've continued to advocate for stronger regulation, explored measures to tackle illegal vehicle use and engaged policymakers on the human impact that uninsured and illegally used vehicles can have on victims and their families.

We also supported National E-Scooter Action Day, which saw police forces across the UK target the illegal use of e-scooters and e-bikes.

Alongside this, we have continued to raise awareness of the issue through stakeholder engagement and national media coverage, helping shine a light on the growing risks posed by illegal e-scooters and e-bikes and the need for effective regulation.

Looking ahead

While there is still more to do, these initiatives demonstrate the progress being made through Accelerating to Zero.

Whether it's helping victims receive support faster, improving data quality, reducing uninsured driving or making sure we’re ready for self-driving vehicles, we're working alongside members, government and industry partners towards ending uninsured driving, making roads safer. For everyone.
