There are 300,000 uninsured vehicles on UK roads, on average, every single day. The relevant fines have been eroded over the years and no longer function as an appropriate deterrent. MIB believes that the fines for both owning an uninsured vehicle and for driving an uninsured vehicle on public roads need to be increased to be proportionate to the average motor insurance premium of £622 (Q4, 2024).
Since 2005, our work with government, insurers and the police has helped seize more than 2.5 million uninsured vehicles. However, we want to go further to reduce uninsured driving, with higher penalties being an important mechanism to help eradicate the issue.
