Continuing our support for forces ahead of MIAFTR move to Navigate
22 June 2025
This summer, we’re inviting all forces to test our Navigate portal, before we move data from the Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud and Theft Register (MIAFTR) into the platform in November 2025.
We’re planning to move MIAFTR into Navigate in November this year, when it will become known as Vehicle Salvage & Theft Data (VS&TD).
Every force wishing to use Navigate needs to sign new product agreements. Staff from the forces who’ve signed will then be invited to conduct testing workshops in August. For participants, this will be a valuable opportunity to explore the new system, ask questions and confirm it meets operational needs. We’ll also share how some forces get best value from their current use of MIAFTR. Additionally, in early Autumn, we’ll offer training support for signed-up police forces.
MIAFTR has been a key tool for all UK police forces since its creation by the insurance industry in 1987. It supports enforcement activity by providing information on write-off categories (A, B, S or N) that aren’t included on the PNC. MIAFTR is also the default mechanism used by all self-insured forces to formally notify the DVLA of any written-off vehicles.
Navigate launched in 2024 as part of a broader modernisation effort by MIB - one step at a time - to deliver modern, reliable data services for insurers, police and the public. It is now the central hub for all vehicle insurance data in the UK and already contains all Motor Policy data, formerly held in the Motor Insurance Database (MID).
We’re committed to making this transition seamless for our policing partners, ensuring this data remains a trusted asset for keeping our roads safe and criminals in check.
