If there’s any doubt, our police helpline is here to help
21 July 2023
Our police helpline is here to help you quickly establish whether a vehicle is insured. We speak to insurers to verify the information a driver has provided, whether it’s at the roadside or before releasing a vehicle that has been seized.
"Without the MIB police helpline, things would be very difficult for us at the roadside and there would potentially be more people being allowed to continue driving while uninsured."
PC David Lee, Safer Roads Policing, Northamptonshire Police
We're here Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm
The number to call is 0800 999 4165
You can also email us at policehelpline@mib.org.uk.
Here's a reminder of what we need to conduct an insurance check:
- VRM, vehicle make and model
- The name of the insurer
- Type of policy (private, motor trade or fleet)
- Name, DOB & address of the policy holder (and driver if different)
Depending on the type of enquiry you are making, we may also need some extra information.
Roadside enquiries
- Purpose of journey: Social, Domestic and Pleasure, Commuting, Business, or Hire and Reward (for food and parcel delivery)
- Policy number (if known)
- For motor trade vehicles (in-trade), ownership details including date of purchase.
Recovery enquiries
- Broker information (if it is a new policy the underwriter may not see the policy on their system)
- Details of the registered keeper
- If the driver is not the policyholder, details of their relationship to the policyholder.
Keep in mind that any insurance status we provide is only accurate at the time of your enquiry.
Out of hours
Outside our normal working hours (Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm) you can log an enquiry by sending us an enquiry form by email at policehelpline@mib.org.uk. We aim to respond as quickly as possible and certainty within three working days.
We can't help with:
- Anything that is not a roadside stop, road traffic collision or recovering a seized vehicle
- If the stop happened more than seven years ago
- If the policy is no longer active on the PNC/MID
- Requests for information about vehicles linked to a crime (data protection requests). These should go to dataprotectionforms@mib.org.uk.
