MIAFTR data is moving to Navigate – what you need to know ahead of the move
20 October 2025
We’re preparing for an important upgrade that will enhance how police forces access vehicle salvage and theft data.
On Monday 24 November, the Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud and Theft Register (MIAFTR) will move into the Navigate platform.
What will this mean?
- MIAFTR goes offline at 12 noon on Friday 21 November.
- No access to Vehicle Salvage and Theft Data during the Go Live weekend.
- Motor Insurance Policy Data (MIPD) will still be available in Navigate, but you might notice slower processing speeds while we migrate the MIAFTR data in.
Why it matters
MIAFTR has been a trusted tool for UK police since 1987, helping forces identify written-off vehicles (Categories A, B, S, N) that aren’t flagged on the PNC. It’s also the go-to system for self-insured forces to notify the DVLA about write-offs.
Once MIAFTR is fully integrated into Navigate, we’ll retire the term but not the functionality. You’ll still have access to the same vital data, just through a more modern, streamlined platform.
Supporting forces
- Training materials including User Guides, demos, and Police FAQs are now available to help you get up to speed. [You can access them here.]
- Forces that signed the new product agreements joined testing workshops in August, giving them a chance to explore Navigate and ensure it meets operational needs.
- We’re still working with the few remaining forces to finalise agreements so they can access Vehicle Salvage & Theft Data in Navigate
What is Navigate?
Launched in 2024, Navigate is MIB’s central hub for Motor Insurance Policy Data (MIPD), replacing the old Motor Insurance Database (MID). It’s designed to deliver faster, more reliable data services for police, insurers, and the public.
Keeping roads safe
This move is all about making sure you have the tools you need to keep communities safe and disrupt criminal activity. We’re committed to making the transition as smooth as possible for our policing partners.
