Navigate – an update on our data transformation programme
28 October 2024
MIB is transforming our data services for insurers, the police and the public.
These valued data services, which have supported the insurance industry and the police for many years, needed modernising. Our Navigate programme is a phased approach to replace ageing technology, improve users experience and respond to emerging technology trends.
It’s our ongoing purpose to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving and to make roads safer by getting those drivers off our roads. Our data helped officers seize 129,000 vehicles for uninsured driving in 2023.
What’s been done so far
Phase 1 saw the replatforming of data from the MID (Motor Insurance Database) into Navigate, a modern and secure cloud platform, in April. This was the largest technical implementation in the MIB’s history, involving many different users and stakeholders. While the 4.1 billion MID data records were successfully migrated to Navigate, we recognise the technical challenges we encountered after launch.
We kept our police and Home Office partners regularly updated as we worked through the issues and supported officers with extra Police Helpline opening hours. We’re grateful to all our police partners for your support during that time.
Navigate is now working as intended, providing good quality data that supports police to remove uninsured drivers from our roads.
What’s next?
We’re now planning for Phase 2 of our programme – the replatforming of the Motor insurance Anti-Fraud & Theft Register (MIAFTR) to Navigate in 2025. We’ll be working with our police partners closely throughout this phase and have invested in our engagement team to support this.
