Providing training and roadside operation support

We know that our police colleagues are working hard, every single day, to remove dangerous uninsured vehicles from our roads. That's why we have expanded our support function, to better provide the training and operation assistance you need to see maximum impact.

We have doubled our team of Law Enforcement Liaison Officers, going from 2 to 4 members, allowing us to better support all areas of the UK. We have also fully overhauled our training package to ensure that all officers receive up-to-date, concise information, to support roadside stops.

The law enforcement liaison team

The law enforcement liaison officer (LELO) team covers all 45 UK forces, comprising:

Each LELO has distinct geographical responsibilities, to better serve police forces and ensure they are able to build close and meaningful relationship with the forces they are responsible for.

The team all come from an operational policing background and have been serving police officers, so they understand not only how policing works but also some of the day-to-day challenges you face. Their roles within MIB are to support police officers and staff, ranging from roads policing teams to front counters, front offices and response teams, in the shared quest to tackle uninsured driving.

How can they support you?

Roadside operations:

  • Providing tactical advice to officers at the roadside, especially relating to the more complex insurance areas of parcel and food delivery, trade policies, and foreign vehicles.
  • Access to live data from the motor insurance database (MID), as well as a direct connection to the MIB Police Helpline, LELOs will assist officers in making decisions about whether a vehicle is being driven without appropriate insurance.

Training:

  • Free, bespoke training inputs, tailored to suit road policing teams, other uniformed policing units, new student intake, or other departments – we work with you to shape training to your requirements.
  • Training is available both in-person or virtually, though we advise training to be face-to-face wherever possible to increase interactivity, in turn driving knowledge retention and sharing.
  • Covering information about MIB, insurance specifics, the databases we own and how they support roadside policing, and an in-depth session on the law and powers surrounding driving without insurance and seizing uninsured vehicles.
  • Follow up packs, providing condensed information to enable officers to refer back to key details and regional hotspot data.

Why should you work with your regional LELO?

Data increasingly indicates that there is a significant relationship between those that choose to drive uninsured and wider criminal activity, so often simply stopping an uninsured vehicle will lead to solving significant additional offences and further protect the public from harm.

As part of our quest to eradicate uninsured driving, it's also important that, when vehicles are seized, other members of the public are made aware of the excellent work police forces do in this area. We supply seizure stickers - both small, suitable for motorbikes, and large, for cars and vans - that are again free of charge, helping you to put out a strong message to the motoring public that there is nowhere to hide when driving uninsured. And, always a bonus, we'll send some pens, mugs, and other MIB items, to keep your team going on long days!
