Making our roads safer

Together, we’re going further and faster than ever before

Supported by our police helplineOperation Tutelage, Operation Drive Insured and our Motor Insurance Database, the police take an uninsured vehicle off the roads every three and a half minutes – more than 2.5 million since 2008.

Every vehicle seized helps make roads safer

Our work is never enough.Despite our achievements together, someone is injured by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver every twenty minutes. 130 people are killed every year. We provide support and compensation to around 350 people with the most serious injuries, many needing care and treatment for the rest of their lives. You’ll also know that uninsured vehicles are often used to conduct wider criminal activity and are more likely to be involved in a collisionAnd it’s the honest majority who end up paying the economic cost through their insurance premiums.

We must do more

Back in April, we announced a further £1.7 million of funding for Operation Tutelage over the next three years from 2024. We also announced that we’re working with our police colleagues on a national enforcement strategy that will take our work with the police to the next level.

In recent weeks, we’ve been busy expanding our enforcement team, as well as researching other opportunities to reduce uninsured driving alongside the Tutelage Programme. We’re still in the early stages of researching a range of options, but that could potentially include working with the government to review legislation, new partnerships, further awareness campaigns, and looking at how data and new technologies could play an even greater role

Our long-term goal is to end the devastating cost of uninsured driving. With this new funding, we’ll continue to expand our vital work with the police to make sure those who are not insured have nowhere to hide.
