How does the Data Protection Act (DPA) affect the MID data?
The DPA covers the personal information that has been entered on to the MID. MIB is the Data Controller and can be found on the Register of Data Controllers. Data protection is taken seriously by the MIB. The release of the data, and in particular personal information, is controlled very carefully, so that it is only made available to parties which qualify. Qualifying parties are MIB and Insurance companies who have access to the data when dealing with insurance claims. The Police have access in order to pursue uninsured drivers. The DVLA have access in order to verify insurance details when road tax is being applied for. Individuals and other parties, have a right to identify the insurer of a third party vehicle when they have been involved in a road traffic accident.
You can see what data we hold about you by submitting a subject access request to the MIB's UKIC service.
