MIB to rescue on database directive26 April 2007
THE Motor Insurance Bureau is launching an information campaign on submitting details of vehicles to its database.
The move follows the results of its own survey, which found that more than 80% of fleets want further help.
Its Motor Insurance Database aims to contain details of all insured vehicles in the country.
Those who fail to update their details face prosecution and fines of up to £5,000 if found guilty.
The bureau carried out a survey among 900 fleet managers. A key finding was that 86% want more help in providing vehicle details.
As a result, the MIB is providing fleet managers, through their insurance companies, with posters and leaflets explaining what they need to do.
Stickers are also available for cars so drivers know their vehicle has been included on the database.
Chief executive officer Ashton West said: ‘The police are increasing roadside checks to deny criminals the use of roads and commercial drivers may get caught up if their company vehicle has not been put onto the MID correctly.
‘Any stop by the police may lead to missed appointments, lost orders or worse still a failure in delivery times. Corporate reputation may also be at risk if commercial vehicles are stopped by the police and we know these kind of stops can be prevented if fleet managers update the MID correctly.’
Bureau bosses say policy holders should contact their insurer or broker direct if they suspect their vehicle details may not be on the database.
