Notes concerning the handling of claims arising from accidents involving foreign registered vehicles in the UK
Basic Principles
As the UK Green Card Bureau, the MIB acts as though it was the insurer of foreign registered vehicles in the UK.
The MIB will handle claims against foreign motorists so long as the foreign registered vehicle comes from a country within the Green Card System and with which the MIB has an Agreement (The MIB currently has agreements with every country in the system).
If the foreign vehicle is insured and the insurer has an agent in the UK, that agent will deal with the claim, under the MIB's ultimate control.
If civil legal proceedings become necessary the MIB, or the foreign insurer's agent, must accept service of proceedings on behalf of the foreign motorist.
Procedure
Is much the same as with any claim against another motorist and his insurers.
Identify the agents of the foreign insurer by going to the "UK Foreign Reps" page.
If the agents are anyone other than the MIB, contact them by telephoning the number shown.
If the agent is the MIB, from Submit a Claim, select either to download an MIB Claim Form, which you can print out, complete by hand and post to MIB, or fill in your details online and submit your claim to MIB. Complete with as much information as you have concerning the foreign motorist and your own losses. Do not delay your claim whilst waiting for estimates.
Check with the police if they attended the accident, as they may have obtained copies of insurance documents or have additional information about the motorist and the vehicle registration.
